Accessibility

This accessibility statement applies to the Connected Histories of the BBC website, and may differ from the accessibility statement of the BBC and University of Sussex, as the site has been created with archive materials and specific functionality related to these materials.

This website is run by the University of Sussex. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. That means everyone should be able to:

  • access most of the information found on the site.
  • zoom most pages in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen.
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard.
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software.
  • listen to, and navigate, most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver).
  • access all video content, either visually, or through accessible technology.

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible is this website?

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. The Connected Histories of the BBC is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

We have taken the following accessibility and usability guidelines into consideration when developing the site:

  • providing simple, consistent operable site navigation.
  • providing easy to perceive and understand content.
  • using an easy-to-read font type.
  • providing the ability to change the colour palette
  • providing text equivalents for images, where appropriate.
  • using semantic HTML to improve readability by screen readers.

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

Much of the of the website content will fall within the exemptions under the accessibility regulations.

Subtitles or captions are not available on the audio visual files, but they are available thorough the KALDI transcriptions, so it is possible to read the text of the audio and video files as they are playing.
